Refugia

Until June 11, 2017

First premiering in 2015 by students of Texas Performing Arts, Refugia is a piece of experimental theater that explores transition and finding one's way when faced at life's crossroads. Telling five individual stories of refugees spanning the course of the last 15 years of world history, we see the struggles undertaken by those who have had to flee across borders from war, oppression and poverty. With the first years of the 21st century being marred by warfare on a scale never seen before, this modern work is a visceral look into the plight of the refugee, using multi-media special effects and video projection to enhance the storytelling.

Native Gardens

July 15 - August 20, 2017

Recently we have seen a spate of plays entering theater repertory that deal with privilege, class and race, and the conflicts that often ensue; Disgraced and God Of Carnage are just two of these. Enter Native Gardens into the lexicon; a story of two neighboring couples who declare war on each other over their gardens, of all things. A red-hot, knife-sharp comedy to suit anybody who has endured a nightmare neighbour, Karen Zacarias' new play wittily explores class warfare over the fence-line.

September 30 - November 5, 2017

Lillian Hellman's comedy-noir first premiered in 1941 perfectly demonstrated her pioneering activism, winning the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award in the same year. A political thriller with a moral moral obligation, it explores the concept of sacrifice and American values, whilst combining black humor and insidious Nazi corruption within the States itself. The safety of one man and his family is under threat thanks to a Nazi sympathiser, who attempts blackmail - they are faced with a moral dilemma to put the greater good ahead of one life.

November 25, 2017 - January 14, 2018

Clear away the dinner plates, dim the lights and join the Guthrie for Noel Coward's classic occult farce. A surefire exciting and entertaining night at the theatre, Blithe Spirit has been titillating audiences since 1941 with the story of novelist Charles Condomine and his disastrous attempt to communicate with the spirit world. As Charles learns from the eccentric clairvoyant Madame Arcati, sometimes it's better to leave the dead where they are!

March 10 - April 14, 2018

Following the success of her Broadway play Eclipsed, Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead) premiered her new work Familiar in New York this March. Now headed to Minneapolis' Guthrie Theatre in 2018 and helmed by Taibi Magar, Familiar is centered on the rifts that open up in a Zimbabwean family over the course of a wedding weekend; this boisterous ensemble piece explores racial and cultural divides with panache. Take cover as explosive family fireworks interweave with questions of cultural identity for the bride-to-be.
