Why See Battlefield?
Peter Brook's Mahabharata Reimagined
Three decades after renowned Tony Award-winning English director Peter Brook first brought The Mahabharata to stage, a brand new production based on the epic Sanskrit poem arises. Helmed by Brook, Battlefield is a timely distillation of the main theme and story of his narrative theater masterwork. The magic of the surreal adventure, as well as it's thought-provoking subject matter, still holds today.
In a land where silk scarves flow like water but also act as shrouds, where characters (and actors) are reincarnated as worms and eagles, war tears a single family asunder. As they struggle to make sense of the crimes they've suffered and perpetrated, as well as the senseless cyclical nature of war, a profound, life-affirming beauty in the face of despair can be found in moments of stillness.
