An arresting new drama that is as poignant now as it was then

Why See The Bluest Eye?

A powerful & topical new drama

A powerful mediation on the historical racial divide in America that haunts it's social commentary, The Bluest Eye is the first novel ever written by renowned American author Toni Morrison in 1970. Now, over four decades later, the poignant coming-of-age-drama is set to be brought to life on stage as part of the Guthrie's latest season, with its sentiments as valid today as they were when it was first published.

Adapted by New York native and director Lileana Blain-Cruz, the story follows a year in the life of a young black girl named Pecola. Searching for love and acceptance, Pecola's sense of identity is tried and tested when in return she receives ridicule for the color of her skin. Developing a distorted view of herself, she prays for the blue eyes of Shirley Temple so that she may fit in with her white contemporaries. Shocking and bittersweet, this astonishing new work is not to be missed.
